Do Pockets and Openings Work?

Pockets and openings should work with the actual items users will carry. A pocket that looks useful in a drawing may be too shallow, too tight, too hidden, or blocked by the zipper when the bag is used.

Test each pocket with real products. For a makeup bag, use bottles, brushes, palettes, tubes, and small tools. For a laptop bag, use the intended device and charger. For a travel pouch, use toiletries. For a tool bag, test actual tools or similar weighted items. For a baby, pet, outdoor, or medical bag, access speed may be especially important.

Opening size is just as important as internal capacity. A bag may technically fit the product, but if the opening is too narrow, users will struggle every time they use it. Zipper direction, corner radius, lining looseness, and pocket placement can all affect access.

Use the sample naturally, not gently. Open it quickly, pack it in a hurry, remove items with one hand, and check whether anything catches or collapses. If the sample annoys you during testing, customers may feel the same.

Are There Odor or Finish Issues?

Odor and finish issues can harm the customer’s first impression even when the bag structure is correct. Check the sample immediately after opening the package, then again after it has aired out. Strong chemical smell, glue smell, coating odor, sticky surface, dirty marks, or sharp edges should not be ignored.

Some materials have a mild new-product smell, especially coated fabrics, PU, PVC, EVA, neoprene, glue, or printed parts. Mild odor may reduce after airing. Strong odor may indicate material, adhesive, ink, or ventilation problems. This is especially important for cosmetic bags, lunch bags, baby bags, pet products, travel pouches, and indoor-use items.

Finish quality includes thread trimming, edge treatment, zipper ends, binding, hardware surface, label cleanliness, lining cleanliness, and packaging presentation. Customers may not know sewing terms, but they notice messy finishing quickly.

When reviewing finish issues, separate simple workmanship corrections from deeper process problems. Loose thread ends may be easy to fix. Peeling coating, strong odor, unstable logo, or sticky surface may require material or process changes.

Is the Bag Ready for Real Customers?

A bag is ready for real customers when it looks good, works naturally, feels appropriate for its price, and does not create obvious complaints during normal use. A sample should not be approved only because the factory can produce it. It should be approved because the market can accept it.

Think about the sales channel. Amazon customers may focus on function, packaging, smell, and value for money. Retail buyers may care about display, barcode labels, and shelf appearance. DTC customers may care about unboxing, brand details, and perceived quality. Promotional buyers may care about cost, logo visibility, and event delivery.

Review the sample as if you were the end customer opening it for the first time. Would the bag feel worth the price? Would the zipper annoy you? Would the logo make the brand look better? Would the packaging protect it? Would you leave a positive review?

If the answer is uncertain, approval may be premature. The sample stage is the right time to fix problems while the cost of change is still manageable.

How Do You Send Sample Feedback?

Send sample feedback in a clear, numbered format with photos, measurements, issue location, required change, and priority level. Avoid vague comments such as “make it better.” Good feedback helps the factory revise faster, prevents misunderstanding, and creates a written reference for final sample approval and bulk production.

What Problems Need Revision?

Problems need revision when they affect function, durability, safety, brand appearance, size accuracy, material quality, packaging, user experience, or bulk consistency. Not every small imperfection requires a new sample, but every critical issue must be documented before approval.

Critical issues include wrong dimensions, wrong material, incorrect logo process, weak handles, zipper jamming, sharp hardware, poor pocket function, strong odor, unstable shape, wrong packaging, or any detail that could cause returns or customer complaints. These should usually be fixed before bulk production starts.

Moderate issues include small alignment errors, slightly uneven stitching, minor color concerns, packaging adjustment, or small structure refinements. Depending on the order size and buyer risk tolerance, these may require a revised sample, photo confirmation, or written correction.

Minor issues include loose thread ends, small sample handling marks, or slight cleaning problems. These can often be approved with written notes if the factory confirms they will be controlled in bulk. The key is to separate real production risk from personal preference.

How Should Feedback Be Written?

Feedback should be written so the factory does not need to guess. Each comment should explain what is wrong, where it is located, what the current sample shows, what the buyer wants instead, and how important the change is.

Use photos with arrows, circles, or numbers. For size changes, include measurement photos. For color issues, include the approved swatch or Pantone reference. For logo issues, include position measurements. For material issues, describe the expected handfeel or provide a comparison sample.

Vague feedback slows down sampling. “The handle feels strange” is difficult to act on. “Handle drop is 28 cm; revise to 23 cm from top opening edge to handle peak” is clear. “Logo looks off” is weak. “Move logo upward by 15 mm and keep it horizontally centered” is actionable.

A clear revision sheet also helps internal buyer teams. Design, purchasing, marketing, and quality teams may all have opinions. A written table keeps the project focused and avoids conflicting feedback.

When Can You Approve the Sample?

You can approve the sample when all critical details match the agreed specification or have been formally accepted in writing. Approval should include the sample version, date, confirmed materials, dimensions, logo method, packaging, remaining notes, and whether the approved sample becomes the production standard.

Do not approve a sample with a casual message like “looks okay” if the order is important. A better approval message is specific: “We approve Sample Version 2 dated June 10 based on the confirmed black 600D polyester, size 40 × 35 × 12 cm, white screen print logo, black lining, zipper pocket, and individual polybag packing. Please follow this sample as the bulk production standard.”

Approval should also mention small corrections that do not require another sample. For example, “Loose thread trimming must be controlled in bulk,” or “Carton label details to follow final FBA file.” This keeps minor issues from becoming later disputes.

Before approval, ask one honest question: Would you accept the full bulk order if every piece matched this sample? If the answer is yes, approval is reasonable. If the answer is no, revise first.

How Do You Keep Bulk Consistent?

Bulk consistency starts at sample approval. The final approved sample should be used as a reference for material purchasing, cutting, logo application, sewing, semi-finished inspection, final inspection, and packaging. If the factory team does not have a clear approved standard, consistency becomes difficult.

Buyers should confirm that the factory keeps the approved sample or a duplicate sealed sample. For larger orders, a pre-production meeting or pre-production sample confirmation can help align the team before cutting starts. This is especially useful for multi-SKU projects, custom colors, special packaging, or complex structures.

Quality control should not happen only at the end. A more reliable process checks materials, accessories, pre-production sample, cutting, sewing process, semi-finished goods, final products, and packaging before shipment. This kind of layered inspection helps reduce the risk of discovering major issues too late.

A good sample review does not end when the buyer says approved. It continues into production records, QC standards, packaging instructions, and shipment preparation. That is how a custom bag project moves from one good sample to a stable bulk order.
