How To Make a Pouch Pocket?

Creating a pouch pocket for your bag is a great way to add extra storage space for small items like keys, phones, or pens. Plus, it’s an easy sewing project you can do yourself! Here’s a step by step guide to help you get it done:

1. Choose Your Fabric

First things first, pick the fabric you want to use for your pouch pocket. If you’re matching the pocket to a bag you’ve already made, choose a fabric that complements or matches the bag material (like nylon, canvas, denim, or cotton). The fabric should also be durable enough to hold the items you plan to store inside. For extra durability, consider using interfacing to reinforce the pocket.

2. Measure and Cut the Fabric
  • Size of the Pocket: Think about how big you want your pouch pocket to be. A typical size might be 5” x 7” for a small pocket, but you can adjust it based on your needs.
  • Seam Allowance: Don’t forget to add extra fabric for the seams. A good rule of thumb is to add about 1/4″ to 1/2″ around the edges of your pocket for seam allowances (e.g., if your pocket is 5” x 7”, cut your fabric 5.5” x 7.5” to account for seams).
3. Prepare the Edges (Optional)

If you want a nice, clean finish and to prevent fraying, you can finish the raw edges of your fabric with a zigzag stitch or use a serger before sewing the pocket together. This step is especially important if you’re using fabric that frays easily, like cotton.

4. Create the Pocket Opening
  • Fold the top edge of the fabric down about 1/4″ to 1/2″ (depending on the fabric) and press it with an iron to create a clean edge.
  • Now, fold it down another 1/2″ to 1″ to create a hem at the top of the pocket. This is the part that will be open, so make sure it’s neat and pressed flat. Sew along the fold to secure it in place. This is your pocket’s opening.
5. Sew the Sides and Bottom of the Pocket
  • Fold the Fabric: With the pocket opening at the top, fold the fabric in half so that the sides meet, forming the shape of your pocket.
  • Sew the Sides and Bottom: Using a straight stitch, sew along both sides and the bottom of the fabric, leaving the top edge open. Be sure to backstitch at the beginning and end to reinforce the seams.
  • Trim Excess: After sewing, trim any excess fabric from the corners to reduce bulk, especially if you’re using thicker fabric.
6. Attach the Pocket to the Bag
  • Position the Pocket: Now that your pocket is ready, decide where you want to place it on your bag. A common spot is along the inside lining of the bag or on the outside if you want it to be visible.
  • Pin the Pocket: Place the pocket where you want it and pin it in place. Make sure it’s aligned properly and not twisted.
  • Sew the Pocket to the Bag: Sew along the sides and bottom of the pocket to attach it to the bag. You can sew around the pocket opening for extra security, especially if you’re adding heavier items to the pocket.
  • Reinforce the Edges: If needed, you can reinforce the stitching around the edges of the pocket to make sure it’s securely attached.
7. Finishing Touches
  • Double-Check: Once you’ve attached the pocket, check to make sure everything is secure and that the pocket opens and closes smoothly.
  • Iron the Pocket: Give everything a final press with the iron to make the edges crisp and give the pocket a professional finish.
  • Optional: Add a Closure: If you want to add a closure to your pouch pocket (like a snap, zipper, or velcro), now is the time. You can sew a small piece of velcro to the top edge or add a zipper for extra security.

You now have a custom-made pouch pocket on your bag. It’s perfect for keeping small items organized and accessible. Plus, it’s a simple project that you can personalize with fabric and finishes that match your style!
