What is the difference between cotton and canvas?
Cotton and canvas are both made from cotton fibers, but the way they’re woven and used makes them quite different.
Cotton is a soft, breathable fabric that’s lightweight and gentle on the skin. It’s commonly used in clothing, bedding, and soft fabric items. Cotton is also highly absorbent, making it a great choice for items like t-shirts and towels. Its soft texture and ability to take on dyes easily allow for vibrant, comfortable, and fashionable products. However, because of its light nature, it’s not as durable or resistant to wear and tear as thicker fabrics.
Canvas, is made from cotton (or sometimes linen) but is woven in a much tighter and thicker pattern. This gives canvas its strength and durability. It’s more rugged and heavier compared to regular cotton, making it perfect for products that need to withstand tough conditions, such as backpacks, tote bags, shoes, or outdoor gear. While it’s not as soft as regular cotton, canvas is often chosen for its long-lasting nature and resistance to abrasion and damage. Some types of canvas are also treated to be water-resistant, which adds another layer of functionality.
Cotton is soft, lightweight, and comfortable, ideal for everyday wear or delicate items, while canvas is tough, durable, and perfect for products that need strength and structure.
