Skive & Prepare Edges

  • Use a skiving knife or machine to thin edges where folds occur (flaps, top edges) by ~50%.
  • Bevel raw edges with an edge beveler for a rounded finish.

Glue & Assemble Layers

  • Apply contact cement or leather glue to leather + interfacing (or lining).
  • Let it dry until tacky, then press layers together firmly.
  • This temporary bonding makes stitching easier and more accurate.

Stitching the Main Body

  • Mark stitch lines: typically ⅛″–3⁄16″ from the glued edge using a wing divider.
  • Use a stitching groover for a recessed channel.
  • Punch holes with pricking irons or wheel at 8–10 SPI (stitches per inch).
  • Hand‑stitch with saddle stitch: two needles, one thread—extremely strong and long‑lasting.
  • Alternatively, use a heavy‑duty sewing machine if leather weight and machine allow.

Attach Hardware

  • Reinforce strap anchor points with rivets or bartacks.
  • Install D‑rings or O‑rings for detachable straps, using a mallet and setter block.
  • Fit magnetic snap or zip closure, ensuring alignment before cutting the leather.

Finish Edges

  • Burnish raw edges: dampen lightly, then rub with a slicker (wooden or bone) back and forth.
  • Apply edge dressing—wax‑based or gum tragacanth—for a polished look.
  • Buff with a soft cloth until smooth and shiny.

Add Lining & Pockets

  • Stitch pockets (zip or slip) onto lining panels before assembly.
  • Assemble lining: sew panels together, leaving a 3″–4″ gap at the bottom.
  • Invert the leather shell inside out, insert the lining, align and stitch around the top edge.
  • Pull the body right‑side‑out through the gap, then hand‑sew the lining gap closed.

Final Touches & Quality Check

  • Inspect all seams for even stitches and tight tension.
  • Test hardware: open/close zippers, snap magnets, adjust buckles.
  • Condition the leather with a light coat of leather balm to seal and nourish.
